Fargo Police Offer Safe Winter Driving Tips

November 23: With severe weather and icy road conditions just around the corner, the Fargo Police Department is encouraging area commuters to follow the safe driving practices listed below:

Slow downThe posted speed limit is intended for perfect driving conditions.  We often see red light violations and crashes at intersections because drivers are traveling too fast to stop when the light turns red.

Increase your following distanceYour vehicle will take a significantly greater distance to stop on icy roads.  Rear-end collisions are common during winter months.  Increase the distance you follow vehicles to give yourself enough time to stop if the driver suddenly brakes in front of you.

Four-wheel-drive does not decrease your stopping distanceFour-wheel-drive vehicles often give the driver a false sense of security.  While four-wheel drive may give you the traction to accelerate, it does not help you stop any faster than a two-wheel drive vehicle.

Steering with anti-lock brakesIn the event your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes and you are forced to suddenly brake on ice, keep in mind you may be able to steer the vehicle away from an object to avoid a collision.

Plan aheadTake the pressure off of yourself by allowing plenty of time to arrive at your destination.  Being in a rush can result in dangerous driving decisions.

Avoid distractions – There are numerous driver distractions which will increase the probability of being involved in a crash such as using your cell phone, texting adjusting your radio, or searching for objects in the car.  Basically, any behaviors which will take your eyes away from the road or your hands away from the steering wheel.

Drive defensively Even if you are following all of the above suggestions, other drivers may not be.  Be prepared for their mistakes.
